A police car pulls up in front of Grandma Bessie's house, and Grandpa Morris gets out. The polite policeman explained that this elderly gentleman said that he was lost in the park and couldn't find his way home. "Oh Morris," said Grandma. "You've been going to that park for over 30 years! So how could you get lost?" Leaning close to Grandma so that the policeman couldn't hear, Morris whispered, "I wasn't lost. I was just too tired to walk home."
Hebrews 12:1: “Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,..”
We’ve all been there. Where your get up and go has gone up and went. You just don’t have the energy to go to work, school, practice, see your parents, or go to church. Sometimes, we’re slowed down to a crawl or completely stopped by a heavy weight of some burden. Are you burdened by worry, anxiety, or the works of the flesh? When we are trying to run this race in our strength, we get weighed down by the things of this world. Weight slows you down! Then there is the snare of sin. It might be an attitude, it might be a relationship, it might be a habit, or it might be some selfish attitude. Whatever it is, we cannot run the race that God has put us in with sin ruling our lives. We need endurance. The word used here is also translated patience, but it’s a patience, not with people as much with our circumstances.
So, maybe we don’t know what’s going to happen with our job, or child’s school, health or whatever difficult time we’re experiencing. This is not the time to quit and roll over. This is when we’re supposed to ask the Lord for strength and enduring power! Or maybe we’ve stumbled or fallen in sin. Yes, the consequences stink! But, our God is a God of grace. He knew we’d fail, but he reaches down to pick us up. Now, is the time to work with Him. Now is the time to push forward as we seek Him and endure the struggle and come out on the other side in obedience - all for the glory of God! He will empower you to stretch forward and finish the race. He will energize you to serve Him, will you ask?
